How self-empowered are you?

Rate yourself on a 1-5 scale (1 is never 3 sometimes 5 always)

  1. I take action on projects without waiting for the boss's approval.
  2. I am able to prioritize tasks.
  3. I easily solve problems and make decisions.
  4. I have my own concrete plans for my personal and professional development, not just something my boss came up with for the office.
  5. I regularly evaluate my personal and professional effectiveness.
  6. I regularly evaluate of my communication effectiveness.
  7. I regularly evaluate my conflict resolution effectiveness.
  8. I have a daily regime to take care of my physical and mental health.
  9. I know I’m left-brained and I regularly do exercises to wake up the right side of my brain.
    OR
I know I’m right-brained and I regularly apply systems that allow me to focus and accomplish tasks.
  10. I support continuous learning for myself through various techniques (i.e. books, seminars, classes, tapes/CD’s, discussion groups, etc.)

10 – 22 Whoa! You need to think about who is in charge of your life. Maybe it’s a boss, a spouse/significant other, or a parent? It certainly isn’t you. You need to honestly answer the question, is there any other person who will do for me what I need or want for my life? If not, then you need to learn how to take the reigns.

23 – 37 Almost got it! Picture a table with one leg shorter than the other three. It can stand but it can’t take a lot of pressure without being really wobbly. That’s you. You’ve got part of your life under your control but there are still areas where you are relying either on another person or the whims of fate. You appear stable but when pressure comes (as it does for all of us at some time) you will probably be pretty shaky. Take a look at your lower scores and focus your energies on learning the techniques to raise those scores.

38-50 Congratulations -You are there! You don’t need me to tell you to go out and celebrate; you’ll do it on your own. Just remember, keeping those “high 5’s” means regular reviews and continuous learning.
